Day 8 – Another Family Needing Sponsored

Today as you consider giving gifts that make a lasting difference, please partnering with EHE in helping this family. Family Sponsorships start at just $34 per month. And please keep spreading the word.

Getachew and Lemlem

Below is the story for Getachew and Lemlem

ehe 219 - Gatachew - 2At the time of admission into the project, Lemlem was struggling because she could no longer work.  This meant she had no money for food or housing or any of her other needs.  Over time she would be faced with needing to give up her child Getachew unless there was intervention.

Lemlem’s story is so similar to many other Moms in the project.  While she had a husband, he left the family alone in the slum without skills or education or work – to fend for themselves while refusing to take any responsibility for his family.   It left Lemlem and Getachew in a terrible situation.

Now, Getachew comes to our Day Care center 5 days per week where he is fed nutritious food, given a safe clean environment, cared for by caring care-givers, provided socialization, given the opportunity to learn through creative means and best of all he gets to go home with his  Mom every night. Their family is preserved.

At the same time Lemlem is back to work and is dreaming about what she would like to do next.  She is seeing dignity restored and hope is alive.  Now she is able to see a glimpse of light and she seems very willing to take hold of the opportunity.

Here is an updated photo of Getachew.  This photo was taken on his 2nd Birthday.

Day 7 – A Family Needing Sponsored

Today as you consider giving gifts that make a lasting difference, please partnering with EHE in helping this family. Family Sponsorships start at just $34 per month. And please keep spreading the word.

Frewoyni and her children Mamuk and Fiyerie
Below is the story for Mamuk and Frewoyni

ehe 217 - Mamuk - 2
At the time of admission into the project, Fiyerie was suffering greatly.  Originally from Eritrea, she is far away from family but is not able to go back to them.  Her husband divorced her leaving her to care for her 3 children.  She was unable to care for her children and work at the same time, leaving her to beg for a living.    This life was not working, leaving her children malnourished and leaving their whole family homeless as they tried to shelter themselves in under an awning in the slum during the cold rainy season.  They were desperate.

At first we admitted Fiyerie into the project.  She was tiny at the age of only 8 months and the most in need of care.   Now we also have added 4 year old Mamuk.

Below are updated photos of Mamuk and Fiyerie.

Today life is much different for this family.  Fiyerie attends the day care everyday where she is thriving.   Mamak attends the school where she is being nourished and educated.  She is learning and growing.

The whole family is still together.  Now they have a room.  Frewoyni is working.   Mamuk and Fiyerie have a safe place.   Frewoyni has a growing network of friends and community around her.   They are embracing hope…one dignity restoring step at a time.

Please consider partnering with us in the care of Mamuk and Frewoyni.  We already have Fiyerie fully sponsored, but we have 4 sponsorship slots remaining for Mamuk. Please consider taking one slot at $34 per month or get some friends and family members involved and take all 4.

Day 5 – A Family Needing Sponsored

Today as you consider giving gifts that make a lasting difference, please partnering with EHE in helping this family. Family Sponsorships start at just $34 per month. And please keep spreading the word.

Bizuyel and her children Genet and Tigist

Below is the story for Bizuyel and Genet

EHE151-Genet-2When Bizuyel came to the project, she was at the end of her rope.  She had tried to hold on for as long as she could – begging to care for her two children.  Her children were not getting enough to eat and malnutrition and sickness was taking its toll.

Imagine for a minute what that life looked like for Bizuyel as she held Tigist in her arms every day asking for Bread or for a Birr (5 US cents) to feed her baby not to mention paying her rent.  At the same time Genet would have followed person after person along the sidewalk – hounding people for money.  This life stripped the whole family of dignity – while also delaying the inevitable for just one more day.  There was going to come a day when Bizuyel could no longer care for both children – or sickness would strike.

Compare that prior life to life today.  Now Genet enters our school every morning where she learns in the Nursery Class.  She is being socialized.  She is being fed.  She is receiving extra nutrition through PlumpyNut.   She is clothed.  She is being educated and is able to play and be a kid – she no longer has to provide for their family.

For Tigist it means that she enters our clean safe Day Care every day where she learns and plays.  She is around other children and is learning through creative means.  She has caring care givers who help her to grow.  She is being nourished and is receiving extra nutrition through PlumpyNut, too.

And consider the new life that Bizuyel has in front of her.  She now is sewing basketballs for a living.  Now, its not much money, but it is a start.  The bottom line is that now she is giving back and no longer begging – dignity is being restored of her.   She is delighted to see her children getting an education, she is saving and she is hoping for a better job.   Hopelessness has left her and she is living again.   Best of all, every single evening she gets to have her beautiful kids in her home with her.  Her family is persevered.

Day 4 – A Family Needing Sponsored

Today as you consider giving gifts that make a lasting difference, please partnering with EHE in helping this family. Family Sponsorships start at just $34 per month. And please keep spreading the word.

Leyuwerk and Tomiyas.
Below is the story for Leyuwerk and Tomiyas.

EHE182-Tomiyas-2

.
Leyuwerk is one of our heroes.  She has faced a lot of difficulty in her life.  Having at one time lived as a household servant in a foreign land.  While having gotten pregnant at an inopportune time and not by choice and chosen to keep her baby.

At the time of admission into the project, Leyuwerk was struggling because there was no one to watch little Tomiyas so that she could work.  Not being able to work and with no safety net in place, it meant that their capacity to stay together as a family was in danger.

Now, Tomiyas comes to our Day Care center 5 days per week where he is fed nutritious food, given a safe clean environment, cared for by caring care-givers, provided socialization, given the opportunity to learn through creative means and best of all he gets to go home with his Mom every night.  Their family is preserved.

In the meantime, Leyuwerk is seeing dignity restored one step at a time. She is growing in having a community of people around her and is seeing Jesus’ love presented in action every day. She is no longer alone.

Here is an updated photo of Tomiyas.   He is just about to turn 9 months old!  He is beautiful.

Day 3 – Another Family Needing Sponsored

Today as you consider giving gifts that make a lasting difference, please partnering with EHE in helping this family. Family Sponsorships start at just $34 per month. And please keep spreading the word.

Yordanos, her Dad Simachew and her Mom Serkalem

Here is a great story of courage and the beginnings of healing.  We start first with  Yurdanos’ intake story.

EHE190-Yordanos-2

When Yordanos first came into the project, she was only under the care of her father.  Her mother, Tesfanesh, had been put in the mental health hospital and there was concern about whether she would ever be released.  This meant that Yordanos’ father could not work as a result.

In many situations like this, a father would give up his child.  He would find anyone who could care for the child.  But not Simachew.  He acted like a real man and cared for her even while his wife was away.

This placed him in a difficult situation, acting as a single Dad.  How could he care for Yordanos and work?  It was an impossible situation.

EHE was able to intervene.  Now Yordanos is in school.  Now Simachew is working.  And, Praise God that Tesfanesh has been discharged.  She is home and is working, too.   At the same time EHE’s staff is in her life and able to give her supports and encouragement as she continue son her journey.    We are grateful that we could have the flexibility to intervene in this situation that was a bit out of the ordinary.

Here is the most recent photo of Yordanos…in her school uniform…Check out that smile :)  .  She is nourished and learning.  She and her family are embracing hope.

Day 2 – Families Needing Sponsored

Today as you consider giving gifts that make a lasting difference, please partnering with EHE in helping this family.    Family Sponsorships start at just $34 per month.  And please keep spreading the word.

Etagegn and her children.

Below is the story for Etagegn and her children.
ehe 210 - kalkidan - 2

Etagegn’s story is a rough one.  The mother of 4 children, her husband passed away leaving her with no one to provide.  She has not had a formal education and no job skills.  So, she did what any Mom would do who loved her children and wanted to hold on to them.  She took to the streets and started begging in an attempt to provide.

Over time the health of all of the family members started to decline.  They were in a desperate situation as malnourishment continued to take its toll.  While we heard about their plight, we had no way to assist them at first because the program was full.  However, in time, we were able to welcome them into the program.

Two of the children, Kalkidan (age 4) and Fikir (age 2) have been welcomed into the project fully.  The two older children Melkam and Meseret are attending the EHE School where they are receiving an education, nourishment and health care.  Here are their recent photos – 4 months after entering the project.

Give a Gift that Lasts this Christmas

We need your help…

In these next 2 weeks as we continue to turn our attention to Jesus’ coming and how He changes everything, would you help to spread the word about how a difference can be made in Jesus’ name among families in EHE’s Program?

The truth is that for a fraction of what many families spend on Christmas gifts for each other, a family can be included in our project in Ethiopia where their family can be preserved and orphans prevented.

For half of what the average Christmas dinner will cost or less than the cost of a live tree, a family can partner with one of our families.

We’re not asking you nor others to forego your traditions, unless you feel so led…rather we are asking you to consider a new tradition in addition to your others.

What if this year you chose to partner with a family through family sponsorship and then you engaged in praying for them throughout the year. Its not just your finances that make a lasting difference – your prayers are agents of transformation in the lives of those most in need.

Today we start this countdown to Christmas with one of our families. Would you consider partnering with them this Christmas season? They have 4 sponsorship slots of $34 per month remaining. Take one slot or take all…and make a difference this Christmas.

Habtamu and His Mom Adenech

Below is the story for Habtamu and his Mom.

EHE200-Habtamu-2

Since coming to EHE, Adanech is now able to go to work everyday and Habtamu is in a safe caring place during the day.  Adenech and Habtamu no longer have to beg!  Habtamu is becoming nourished and is thriving.  At the same time he gets to go home with Mom every single night.

Here is the newest photo of Habtamu – just 4 months after entering into EHE’s Program.

Why We are Thankful

I love this time of year when we turn toward giving thanks. For years now we have had a construction paper tree that Christy puts up on our wall around November 1st. Our nightly ritual is then to write on a paper leaf something that we are thankful for and hang it on the tree. As our family has grown, it means that the tree gets fuller and fuller every year with everything from “food” to “family” to “EHE” to “Church” to the names of both old and new friends on it. It helps us to refocus and recenter on gratitude.ehe 063 nejat - 1

For me, that is the beauty of the Fall Season. A time to refocus on gratitude towards God for all He has done and is doing. A season that leads us into advent where we refocus on the greatest of gifts in the coming of Jesus.

I thought I’d list out a few of the things we are thankful for here in Ethiopia as we enter into this season. I’d love to hear your list, too.

We are thankful that we now have the privilege of serving 196 Children and their Moms. To see hope in their eyes means so much. God has blessed us so hugely at EHE.

We are thankful that the Moms are not just being served, but they are growing in dignity and initiative. We recently took a survey and found that out of the 111 families who have been in the project for at least one year, 95% of them now have a savings account. The average amount they have saved is 1,832 ETB or about $92 USD per family. This is a huge change given that they came into the project with virtually nothing.

ehe 001 - FIKADU -2We are thankful for the privilege of educating over 100 children in our school, who otherwise would not have a quality education. The number one dream that Moms in EHE have for their children is that they would be educated. Now it is happening before their eyes and they are filled with gratitude, too.  (To view a recent video of our school, visit   http://vimeo.com/111960062)

We are thankful for the ways we see children and Moms growing holistically. Despite huge issues such as malnutrition, blindness, HIV, TB, physical disabilities, learning disabilities, infections and disease, children and their moms are becoming physically healthy and growing in strength. While once having no one, now these moms have each other and community is building among them and a safety net is developing. While many Moms once had no skills and were illiterate, now many have started to learn to read and write and others are being trained with a skill or working towards a micro-grant. And all the while, Moms are seeing a glimpse of who Jesus is and His desire to know them informally day to day and formally through Embracing Hope Spiritual Ministries.ehe 000 - IRADEET - 2

We are thankful that we’ve been able to provide dignity building jobs in jewelry making for moms with special needs within the project. But we are thankful that it doesn’t stop there. We now have Moms being formally trained in Hairdressing and Tailoring, We have Moms who are being trained to start their own injera business and french fry stands. We have other Moms that soon will be trained to start their own cafe. We have other Moms who will soon be trained to start their own businesses in petty trading. And there are more opportunities to come.

DSC_0910We are grateful for an amazing staff who give their all here in Ethiopia. Many of our staff could choose to work somewhere else in the private sector and make much more than they do working with us. However, they are committed to seeing the lives of Moms and Children changed. We are grateful that they see their work through the eyes of ministry unto God. They are the greatest of gifts to us.

We are grateful for an amazing US Board who continues to look with eyes of faith and wise stewardship. Their hearts to see more Moms and Children served is remarkable.

We are grateful for a great church here in Addis Ababa that we get the privilege of serving in. IEC continues to grow and it is a unique expression of the nations gathering for worship. With fresh eyes toward the future we are dreaming of ways to see God’s Kingdom multiplied through IEC’s ministry throughout the capital city and beyond. It is an exciting time.

We are grateful for how God has added to our family. Now with our 6 children, we are filled with joy. Our 6 kids are outstanding and we love watching them grow in all areas of life – especially as they relate to God and others. We are blessed.

And finally we are grateful for you and how you have continued on this journey with us. We’ve now officially been in Ethiopia over 5 years and what a ride it has been. God has used you as an encouragement to our family and to make a difference in the lives of DSC_0814Mothers, Children and Staff at EHE as well as in the lives of folks at International Evangelical Church – Addis Ababa.

Thank you for your encouragement and support. We are grateful for you.

A Basic Amharic Lesson

We have such great teachers at EHE.  These women not only teach the children, but they love on them, too.

Today we are sharing a video of one of our teachers, Etenesh, teaching a class about the number 5.

Enjoy and perhaps learn some basic Amharic, too.

We are grateful for the ways you have helped to preserve families, prevent orphans AND see the next generation educated.
